The State of the Environment Report 2023 provides the most recent health check on the threats, state and impacts on Samoa’s environment. The report builds on previous SOE reports (1993, 2006 and 2013).

Ta'i'o (shearwaters and petrels) are very special birds in Smoa. They are seabirds. They find their food at sea. They nest on land, in burrows in forests.They return to the forests at night.

The Samoa Ocean Strategy - (SOS) provides a nationally agreed roadmap for ocean governance in Samoa over the next decade. To achieve its purpose and vision, the SOS identifies thirtheen Integrated Management Solutions including completion of a marine spatial plan (MSP) for Samoa's ocean.

The role that natural ecosystems, especially marine and coastal ecosystems, play in human wellbeing is often overlooked or taken for granted. The benefits of humans receive from ecosystems called ecosystem service. Coastal and marine resources and biodiversity provide Samoa's businesses and households and government many real and measurable benefits.

The Samoan Government's Samoa Oceans Strategy (SOS) 2020-2030 aims to support ecosystem-based adaptation by implementing national scale Marine Spatial plan (MSP) while strengthening community engagement in actions that enhance resilience to the impacts of climate change.

An implementation video of marine component taken place in Samoa. There were 9 coastal communities involved, 4 from Upolu and 5 from the big island of Savaii. All these communities are vulnerable to climate change and affects their marine and coastal environment.

A national-scale Marine Spatial Plan (MSP) is one of the four key strategies in the recently launched Samoa Oceans Strategy (SOS) 2020-2030. The SOS aims to use the MSP process to support ecosystem-based adaptation, while strengthening community engagement in actions that enhance resilience to the impacts of climate change. As part of the MSP process, the Samoan Government has identified Samoa’s special and/or unique marine areas (SUMAs). This report synthesises data, literature and the outputs of a dedicated workshop identifying the selected areas.
