The goal of the sub-component 2A is to improve knowledge, monitoring, management capacity and development of the resources of these ecosystems to ensure of the sustainable development of corals. C2A program gathers several institutes from four different countries that are working together within 5 different broad projects and 25 activities. The main technical partners of C2A are Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes (EPHE) - Centre National De La Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), Institut de la Recherche pour le Developpement (IRD) and The University of the South Pacific (USP).

Information currently available from Solomon Islands on blacklip pearl oysters(Pinctada margaritifera) and their potential culture comes from three main sources; records of past exploitation, occasional resource surveys that have included blacklip pearl oysters; and research on culture of blacklip oysters in Solomon Islands. Statistics on past exploitation are limited to export tonnage and value collected by the Statistics Unit of the Ministry for Fisheries and Marine Resources. Spatially resolved data from within the country, by island or by island group are not available. However, since export appears to have been through a single point. Honiara, these records are likely to reasonably accurately reflect the tonnage exported. Of the various resource assessments that have been undertaken the only recent, nationwide one that we are aware of is that coordinated and funded by The Nature Conservancy (TNC) in May- June 2004. All of the information on pearl farming in Solomon Islands is derived from a research project carried out in the period 1993-1997 by the WorldFish Center (previously the International Center for Living Aquatic Resource Management - ICLARM) in collaboration with MFMR and funded by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR). After 1997. through to the present. WorldFish continued research on blacklip pearl production, supported through its own funds, albeit at a reduced level.

The Locally-Managed Marine Area (LMMA) Network is a group of practitioners involved in various community-based marine conservation projects around the globe who have joined together to learn how to improve their results. The LMMA Network is a "learning network,' meaning that participating project teams use a common strategy and evaluation process to learn about the conditions under which using an LMMA approach works, doesn't work, and why. We believe that working together will allow us to learn collectively, improve our marine management activities, and increase the impact of our conservation efforts.

Contents of Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn and Pb were determined in Tridacnidae and Caulerpaceae inhabiting the relatively unpolluted shallow waters of two coral islands in the Southwestern Pacific. Differences in the geochemical pro- perties of the island environments influence the mineral composition of the organisms. Further, the differential accumulation of heavy metals by organs of Tridacna may be due to their biochemical functions and the degree of exposure to ambient sea water.

From Closer external and internal examinations,it is therefore conclude that the fish sampled was not caught from spear,gillnet or line and hook but maybe resulted from other means which can inflicted less external body damages such as 'ava niukini','bleach' or 'dynamite'(if postioned further away from the center of the blast).However,it was scientifically proved that fish at a distance of few hundred metres from the center of the blast can be killed by the impact of the underwater travel sound.

The monitoring and evaluation system of CRISP programme is semester based with 2 reports describing activities from the 1st of January to the 30th of June and the 1st of July to the 31st of December respectively. Actions occurring on the field are classified according to the type of activities, which are explained according to projects comprised into different compo- nents. Components are sub-divided into projects that are under the responsibility of supervisors and managers respectively. The pyramid-shaped programme of monitoring and evaluation plans to summarize activities put in place over each semester. In the first place, reports are submitted to the managers of each project then feedbacks are given to the supervisors of each component for submission and compilation by CRISP Coordination Unit (CCU) at the end of each semester. Each of these 2 stages take approximately one month and consolidating the reports take 2 months after the following deadlines, either September of the same year for the first semester or March of the year N+1 for the second semester. The translation of the consolidated report postpones the issue of English version by few weeks.

The Millennium Assessment for the Ecosystems was another big step towards the development of studies relative to reef economic value. Chapter 2, thus, offers a standard method to assess ecological services and goods provided by ecosystems that will allow the multiplication of this kind of studies (Millennium Ecological Assessment, 2003). At this time, first semester 2008, economic or socio-economic valuation of coral reefs has become a priority issue for many funding agencies and studies are multiplying. Considering the recreational value of the reefs only, 160 studies have been listed by Brander et al. (2007). According to a recent report from the French Ministry of Ecology and Sustainable Development and management, only 11 out of the essential 33 relating to goods and services provided by coral reef ecosystems are anterior to 1997. The 1997-2006 period has clearly been more productive in that respect than the previous decade (Blanquet, 2008).

The Initiative for the Protection and Sustainable Management of Coral Reefs in the South Pacific is now known by the acronym "CRISP" (Coral Reef Initiative for the South Pacific). Initially sponsored by France, this project seeks to develop partnerships with the English- speaking countries and institutions in the Pa- cific, as the use of an English title shows.

Guam, the southernmost island of the Mariana Islands, is likely to encounter a significant typhoon every seven years. During the last thirty years two typhoons have passed directly over Guam—Karen (11 November 1962) and Pamela (21 May 1976). Pamela had maximum winds of 120 kt (145 estimated), minimum sea level pressure of 930 mb, a speed of movement at 7 kt, a diameter of 20 nautical miles, and 33 inches of rainfall during the typhoon passage. The typhoon had its greatest effect along the shoreline where erosion removed many bands of beach deposits and where shoreline vegetation was defoliated. Relatively little damage occurred along the adjacent reef-flat platforms and reef margins. Some unconsolidated materials were shifted. The growing tips of some foliaceous corals fragmented. On the reef front a number of corals were overturned by the storm waves.

Coral reef monitoring lias been an on-going activity in Samoa since 1997. In 1998. a pilot Village Level Coral Reef Monitoring Project (VLCRMP) was initiated in collaboration between The Fisheries Division, the Division of Environment & Conservation and the International Ocean Institute – Pacific Islands. The pilot project provided monitoring equipment and assisted in training the trainers that, in nuns trained 46 villagers from six villages selected from around the country ( Mulipola 2001 ). As a result of the project, several communities have members that are now equipped with the monitoring techniques and they are collaborate with staff of the FD implementing the monitoring of coral reefs in the established community-owned fish reserves.
