Marine litter negatively affects the environment, people and coastal economies around the world. In the Pacific region, the problem is even more severe given countries’ reliance on healthy ocean ecosystems and services.

The Pacific BioScapes is supporting local community monitoring of coastal ecosystem resilience on the islands of Maninita, Taula, Fangasito, Fonua'one'one, Mu'omu'a and Fua'amotu in the Vava'u group. The GEF 6 RIP Project is managing invasives in Tonga through the Pacific Regional Invasive Species Management Support Service.

ABC, Project Wild visits Tonga to witness the efforts by three ladies, from the Vava'u Environmental Protection Association (VEPA) to save the Tongan Whistler (an endemic bird to Tonga), by eradicating rats with bait stations and removing other food sources such as the Invasive weed - Lopa.

Project Wild ABC visits Tonga where three young men attempt to restore the native bush called Toloa rainforest that is home to their endangered birds. Weeding out the invasive weeds, conserving and managing the native plants as an act of Climate Resilience.

Sustainable Coastlines is providing in person training for communities and associations involved in the implementation of the SWAP Marine litter Pilot Projects, to enable them to conduct statistically sound beach litter surveys and audits during clean-up activities and to enable them to record this data using the Litter Intelligence online application for Marine Litter data sharing.

Tonga’s waste management practices are reliable and diversified. There is a range of collection services and disposal measures in place for different types of waste (e.g., commercial waste, household waste, hazardous waste). Organic waste is often composted by households and or mulched for reuse by the community. In Tonga, recycling efforts are primarily driven by the private sector.

Motor oils are used in internal combustion engines or associated mechanical parts. Their main function is lubrication of moving parts, but they also clean, inhibit corrosion and cool the engine by transferring heat. Motor oils are derived from petroleum-based and non-petroleum synthesised chemical compounds. Similarly, hydraulic fluids are low compressibility oils that transfer power in hydraulic machinery. Common hydraulic fluids are also based on mineral oils.

This report is structured in relation to the elements of climate change mitigation adaptation actions in Tonga which have elements in the GIS environment and within a relational database.

Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs) are under increasing pressure from development and growing human population and the social and economic pressures associated with this growth. Increased populations and urbanisation have led to increased product imports and waste generation.
