Waste management - Pollution - Vanuatu
                Abstract
This case study showcases an innovative and culturally grounded approach to environmental education in Vanuatu. Faced with growing waste management challenges, the Department of Environmental Protection and Conservation (DEPC) partnered with local theatre group Wan Smolbag to launch a creative public awareness campaign. A play was developed, titled "Bae Yumi Winim Kompetesen Ia!" (We Will Win the Competition!), the initiative used live community theatre to engage audiences across 40 communities. The play combined humour, music, and relatable storytelling to highlight the dangers of plastic pollution, the risks of burning waste, and the value of proper waste segregation. The response was overwhelmingly positive: over 2,600 people attended performances, with 91% reporting they learned something new, and 98% expressing intent to change their waste practices. Beyond awareness, the project inspired practical change—from village clean-ups to shops replacing plastic with paper products. This case study demonstrates how culturally relevant, community-led theatre can be a powerful tool for environmental change, especially in contexts with limited formal infrastructure
