Kept in video collection|A training video for the rehabilitation of oiled birds based on the "IRON BARON" oil spill in 1995
Abstract
In July 1995, over 500 tonnes of fuel leaked from the BHP cargo carrier "Iron Baron", which ran aground on Hebe Reef off the north coast of Tasmania. Thousands of birds and other wildlife were affected by the oil. This video is a record of experiences gained by Queensland Department of Environment and Heritage officers who, with other wildlife officers and volunteers, participated in the rehabilitation of some 2,000 penguins and 50 cormorants. It shows appropriate clean up measures, the organisation of volunteers and the need for a planned approach to dealing with oiled wildlife.
