The 1986 Tonga National Nutrition Survey estimated that 39% of women and 10% of men in Tonga were obese on the basis of a Body Mass Index (BMI) of over 32 for men and over 30 for women. Ministry of Health data continued to indicate an increase in noncommunicable disease in Tonga, particularly diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Thus the competition.
