The Oceanic Fisheries of the Western and Central Pacific (Baseline Studies)

Following an analysis of transboundary marine issues in the Pacific, a strategic Action Programme (SAP) for the International Waters (IW) of the Pacific Islands region was completed in 1998. In the context of oceanic fisheries, the SAP noted that there was inadequate understanding of the definitive 'warm pool' oceanic ecosystem of the western and Central Pacific Ocean (WCPO) and lack of coherent strategies to manage the globally significant tun fisheries based there. Int e early 2000 a IMD{/Global Environment Facility (GEF) IW Project valued at US$12.06 million commenced, including and Oceanic Fisheries Management (OFM) component to be completed over the period 2000 to 2003.
