From Africa to India, from the Pacific shores to the Carribean, it's 1.7billion people make up 30% of the world's population and account for 25% of global trade. They belong to many ethnic groups, religions and cultures in both developing and developed countries. The Commonwealth is an informal network. At its centre is the Commonwealth Secretariat, an intergovernmental body. There are also more than 80 non-governmental organisations and professional groups which link people at all levels. Some of its Keywork Programmes are Strengthening Democracy, Promoting Gender Equality, Private Sector Development and Youth Empowerment. The significance and relevance of the Commonwealth continues to grow as it helps developing states with the provision of technical and financial support.
