Sea Turtle Monitoring Manual: A Guide to Selecting Appropriate Tools for Basic Sea Turtle Research and Monitoring

This manual is not a summary of all that is known about sea turtles. There are already very good books and resources that do that. It is also not exhaustive about research and monitoring. Nor it is the global synthesis of all turtle research options. Advanced research into breathing rates and blood plasma and stable isotopes and hearing and endocrinology are a bit out of our scope. Here, we will deal with the basics that inform conservation and management. And by the basics I mean how many nesting turtles do we have; where are they; what threats do they face; and why this knowledge is useful.

Mineral extraction from seabed has experienced a recent surge of interest from both the mining industry and marine scientists. While improved methods of geological investigation have enabled the mapping of new seafloor mineral reserves, the ecological impacts of mining in both the deep sea and the shallow seabed are poorly known.

Since 1999, the black rat (Rattus rattus) has been eradicated from 14 Italian islands, and eradication is ongoing on a further five islands. Most projects were funded by the European Union (EU) Life Programme. Over the years, eradication techniques have been improved and adapted to different situations, including aerial bait distribution on islands with large inaccessible areas, which otherwise would have relied on a manual bait distribution. A priority list of eradications on islands, which was compiled ten years ago, has been met to a large extent, as rats have been successfully eradicated from many islands of great importance to breeding seabirds. Despite some cases of re-invasion occurring in early projects, advances in biosecurity measures have allowed for eradications on islands where this was previously considered unfeasible due to a high risk of re-invasion. This paper reports on black rat eradication work performed on Italian Mediterranean islands with small villages. We show biodiversity benefits of these programmes, but also qualitatively address socio-economic and health impacts on local communities. Eradication projects have faced new obstacles, due to recent changes in legislation which complicated the application of rodenticides and made it very difficult to get permission for aerial distribution of bait on some of the priority islands.

Cook Islands is composed of 15 islands with a total land area of approximately 23,600ha. which fall naturally into northern and southern groups. The total population at the 1991 census was 18,552, the overwhelming majority of whom live in the southern group, principally on Rarotonga. The area of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) is over 1.8 million square kilometres. Though the recent rapid development of a black pearl industry in Cook Islands has been impressive, in general terms the marine resources in Cook Islands' EEZ have yet to be fully developed. Fisheries and marine resources are predominantly utilised by Cook Islanders on a subsistence and artisanal basis. Responsibility for these resources is vested in the (Minister) Ministry of Marine Resources (MMR), headquartered at Avatiu, Rarotonga. Outer islands with fisheries personnel are Pukapuka, Manihiki, Aitutaki, Penrhyn, Palmerston, Mitiaro, and occasionally, Mangaia.
