In 2016 the project Tackling Invasive Non-Native Species in the UK Overseas Territories was initiated, funded through the FCO’s Conflict, Stability and Security Fund (CSSF). The project objective is “to improve the biosecurity of the OTs against invasive non-native species to improve their environmental resilience and food security; achieved through reducing the risk and impact of invasion and natural hazards via technical assistance and capacity building”. In order to plan the appropriate capacity building activities a gap analysis was carried out between January and March 2017 on biosecurity practices and capacity in all 16 UK OTs.

Making land work reflects the input of some 80 experts and practitioners in land and development from the Pacific region, including Australia and New Zealand. A steering group of senior representatives from government, regional organisations and civil society in the Pacific countries provided broad guidance and advice for both volumes. In this chapter we provide a brief introduction to how protected area systems have evolved – from the historical 10% representation target to our current recognition that gap analyses are required to assess where these protected areas best safeguard, or should safeguard, our planet’s biodiversity. We summarize recent intergovernmental mandates that call for strategic assessment of the effectiveness of protected area networks, and we introduce the concept of KBAs as a tool for fulfilling these mandates.
