This report is a review of the status of knowledge of Samoan birds and is based on existing information and research conducted in Samoa over the past 100 years. The review was commissioned by the O le Siosiomaga Society Inc (OLSSI) as part of a collaborative project to identify Samoa's important bird areas (IBAs) between OLSSI, the Birdlife Pacific Partnership, Conservation International's Pacific Islands Program (CI-PIP) and the Samoan Ministry of Natural resources and Environment (MNRE)

Fishing has been major source of food, income, recreation activity, employment and various other economic benefits for the people of Pacific island countries and territories (PICTs). However with increases in population, urbanisation and development of fisheries, it has been realised that fisheries resources, although renewable are not infinite. They must be properly managed if their contribution to the nutritional, economic and social well-being of the growing population is to be sustained.

Savai'i and Upolu islands are moderately well roaded, the former with di sco ntinuous coast roads, the latter with coastal and two cross-island roads. All islands are covered with moderately den se tropical forest, which, however, does not render progress as difficult as in many types of New Zealand forest. Upolu Island is narrowly elliptical in outline, roughly 47 miles by 16 miles; a rugged chain of volcanic cones forms the crestal ridge rising to 3,600 ft. Savai'i Island, 47 miles by 27 miles, consists of broad coalescing domes topped by numerous cones, of which the highest rise to over 6,000 ft.

This short history of Western Samoa is the work of twelve writers from Western Samoa who took part in a history writing project sponsored by the United Nations Development Programme through the Western Samoa Extension Services Centre of the University of the South Pacific. This book was edited by Malama Meleisea and Penelope Schoeffl Meleisea who also participated as coordinators and writers in the project, which was initiated by Professor Albert Wendt. This short history is written for the general reader, for senior high school and university students seeking an overview of the events of the past in Samoa from prehistoric times to the contemporary era. It examines thematically the influences of early European settlers, the major churches,the German and New Zealand Colonial periods, the background to Western Samoa's becoming the first independent state in the Pacific Islands in 1962,and the first two decades of the Independent State of Western Samoa.

This air photo survey was conducted primarily to assist with recovery operations associated with the serious damage of coastal areas caused by cyclone Val in December in 1991.

Samoa was first sighted by Roggerwein in 1722,. He gave the Samoa Islands the name the Isles of the Navigators, when he noted how much the natives used canoes.

This Report has been prepared through consultations between the Forbity Division of the Ministry of Agriculture,Forests, Fisheria & Meterology and the Environment Division of the Department of Lands Survey & Environment. Looko like Environment Division has the same survey and i do not know whether those survey questionaire are focused on the same Objective.
